Education in Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh has one of the highest literacy rates which is about 83.78% in India next to Kerala. Hamirpur is among the top districts in the country for literacy. Literacy rate of women are quite encouraging in the state. The standard of the education in the state has reached a considerably high level as compared to other states in India with the establishment of several reputed educational institutes in the state. Still the government is working continuously to increase the level of education in the state. The state has many good colleges and universities for taking higher education.
There are over 10,000 primary schools, 1,000 secondary schools and more than 1,300 high schools in Himachal. The state government has decided to start three major nursing colleges to develop the health system in the state. In meeting the constitutional obligation to make primary education compulsory, Himachal has became the first state in India to make elementary education accessible to every child.
Himachal Pradesh University established in 1970, is the state university located in Summerhill, Shimla. It has around 300 affiliated colleges, including Degree colleges(UG&PG), Medical,Ayurvedic, Pharmacy, Management, Nursing, Law and Hotel management colleges etc. Himachal Pradesh Technical University was established in 2010 in hamirpur which include 12 engineering colleges.
Central University Kangra, Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Krishi Vishvavidyalaya Palampur, Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar university of horticulture and Forestry in Nauni, Sirmour are the other renowned universities. State also has 12 private universities.
Himachal Pradesh has three Medical Colleges,one Ayurvedic, one Homoeopathic, one Veterinary, 4 Dental colleges and several Nursing colleges. IGMC, Shimla and RPGMC, Tanda are the two medical colleges run by state govt. Another college to be run by ESIC at Nerchowk, Mandi will start from next acedemic session.
Himachal Pradesh is a late starter in establishing engineering institutes as compared to other states of India. National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur (then Regional Engineering College, Hamirpur) was the first engineering college of Himachal Pradesh, established in 1986. Today Himachal has 19 engineering colleges including two govt. colleges,an IIT, NIT and private University Colleges.
Himachal Pradesh has one govt. and 12 private Pharmacy colleges affiliated to HPU, Shimla and some colleges under private Universities in the state.
There are about 300 govt. and private degree colleges in Himachal Pradesh, affiliated to HPU, Shimla. These colleges offers various under graduate and post graduate courses in Science, Arts and Commerce. Some colleges are also being run by ICDEOL, Shimla and IGNOU for their correspondence programs.
