Barot Mandi | Tourist Place Himachal Pradesh

Barot is a small tourist place near Joginder Nagar in Chauhar Valley of Mandi District. Barot is sandwiched between two parallel hills of Dhauladhar mountain ranges. It is located on the sides of river Uhl.

Barot is situated at a height of 1800 m in the Dhauladhar ranges of Himalaya. Barot is surrounded by the thick forests of Deodar and Himalayan oak.

Multhan which is part of Kangra District and separated by a small river from Barot make it a perfect destination.

The Uhl river provides magnificent views to the visitors across the valley. Two artificial water reservoirs and a barrage on Uhl river enhance the beauty of this place. The water from these reservoirs are fed to the turbines of Shanan Power House in Joginder Nagar through tunneled pipes. Shanan Power house was the oldest Hydro Power station in Himachal Pradesh.

A track of haulage trolley built by the Britishers, which connects Barot to Jogindernagar is another attraction here. This track was used to transport goods and building material for the reservoir construction. The remains of track are still there. This track also leads a trek to Bridge Mandi, Joginder Nagar.

Across the river Uhl is the Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary, home to Ghoral, Himalayan Black Bear and a variety of pheasants. It is the home of local Deity Dev Pashakot. Barot also offers trails to Bada Bhangal, Manali and Kullu. Through woods of cedar and pine a trek route cuts across the valley to Kullu.

Barot is an ideal place for day hike as well for 2-3 days stay in peace. In winters valley looks more wonderful after snowfall. Economy accommodations are available here. Barot is also famous for trout fish farms and angling in the Uhl river.

Weather and Climate

The climate in Barot remains pleasant around the year. In summer temperature floats between 25-35°C while in the winter temperature falls to 0°C to 10°C. Barot experiences moderate to heavy snowfall in the winters. There is no specific time to visit Barot. You can visit for a day or two any time of the year.

Places And Activities

JHATINGRI (2012 m) :Jhatingari is just 12 km from Joginder Nagar on midway to Barot is an enchanting spot at top of a hill.It Surrounded by thick deodar forest. Summer palace of rulers of Mandi was here, ruins of which still can be seen.

Multhan : Just 1.5 km away from Barot Multhan is the first village of Kangra District. A road leads to the remote valley.

Bada Bhangal : Bada bhangal is the remotest village of Kangra District. Trail to the Bada Bhangal starts from Barot.

How to reach?


Barot Can be reached by road from Mandi and Joginder Nagar. It is 65 kms from Mandi and 40 kms form Joginder Nagar. The road passes through Jhatingri and Tikkan. From Tikkan, the road runs along the Uhl river till Barot.
Periodic buses from Mandi while frequent buses are available from Joginder Nagar. Taxis can be easily available from both places.
