Chail Solan | Tourist Place Himachal Pradesh

Chail is a hill station in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. Chial is situated at a height of 2250 meters above sea level. Chail was a small village in the hills of Himachal Pradesh.

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala got fascinated by the beauty of the place and transformed it as summer capital after being exiled from Shimla. The hill station of Chail is located between three adjacent hills, Rajgarh, Pandava and Siddh Tibba hills.

This hill station is located at a distance of 49 kilometers from Shimla. World's highest cricket and Polo ground are situated here. These grounds were owned by the Royal family of Patiala. The area is surrounded by beautiful Chir Pine and Deodar forests. Shimla and Kasauli hill stations are also visible from Chail at night. Beautiful view of river Sutlej can be sighted down the valley from Chail. The palace of Maharaja is a great place to visit in Chail. There is also a beautiful view of snowcapped peaks in Himalayan ranges. This hill town enables you to enjoy the peace and beauty of nature. There are various places for sightseeing, and tourists can also go for fishing and trekking. The Chail palace resort, maintained by Himachal Pradesh tourism, is a heritage hotel that has a royal setting and offers a magnificent view of the hill station to the tourists.

There is a wildlife sanctuary near Chail which is the home for 'ghoral', 'kakkar', 'sambhar', 'red jungle fowl' and 'khalij' and 'cheer' pheasants. Tourists can also visit the sanctuary to get an insight of Himalayan wildlife.

Weather and Climate

Summers are very pleasant and an average temperature during day is about 15°C. The maximum temperature can go up to 24 °C. Summer is the best season to visit Chail for sure.

Monsoon season in Chail continues from the month of June till September having a average rainfall.

The minimum temperature in the winter goes as low as 2 °C. The winter season witnesses snowfall quite frequently.

Places And Activities

SIDH BABA KA MANDIR (1.5 km) :Maharaja Bhupinder Singh originally began building his palace at this site. It is said that a Sidh - saintly person - appeared before the Maharaja in dream and declared the place to build the temple.

CRICKET GROUND (3 km): Built in 1893, after leveling top of a hill at an height of 2444 m, is the highest cricket pitch and polo ground in the world.

WILDLIFE SANCTUARY (3 km) :The Chail sanctuary has ghoral, sambhar, kakkar, red jungle fowl and khalij. Machan like sighting posts have been built at Khuruin.

KUFRI :Kufri is a well known tourist spot in distt Shimla. It also famous for Skiing. It is just 45 km from Chail

SADHUPUL :Between Kandaghat and Chail is this village and bridge on the Ashwani stream. It is a good picnic spot.

How to reach?


Chail is connected by road. From Shimla via Kufri the distance is 45 km and via Kandaghat is 61 km. Buses for Chail can be taken from Shimla and Solan. The nearest airports are at Chandigarh (120 km) and Shimla (63 km).
