Mcleodganj | Tourist Place in Kangra Himachal Pradesh

Mcleodganj is located near Dharamsala in the lap of Dhauladhar ranges. Mcleodganj is now the home of His Holiness Dalai Lama and head quarter of Tibetan Govt in Exile. Lakhs of visitors come here to meet Dalai Lama and visit Buddhist Monastery.

Mcleodganj is located at an altitude of 1700 meters above the sea level in Dhauladhar Ranges near Dharamshala in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. It is a very popular learning center of Tibetan culture and the teachings of Buddhism.

It has been given the name, Little Lhasa as being the capital of Tibetan Govt. The town is architecturally grand as it has many temples, monasteries and ancient structures that catch the eyes of the visitors. The whole environment of the place is made serene and tranquil by the lifestyle and religious practices of the Buddhists.

Mcleodganj is blessed by nature and has been provided by the amazing scenic charms and extremely calm environment. Apart from the Buddhist pilgrims, many tourists visit this beautiful town to witness the tranquility of the place. It is one of the favorite tourist destinations of Indians as well as foreigners.

The impressive monastery has larger than life images of the Buddha, Padmasambhava and Avaloktwshwara. The large Tibetan community and the presence of traditional architectural designs drawn from Tibet have enhanced the area. Tibetian handicrafts and garments are available on sale every Sunday. The Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts is just a km away and organises a ten day festival from the second Saturday of April.

There are many places to visit near Mcleodganj like Bhagsunag, Dal Lake etc. Triund is the most famous trek of Kangra district.

Weather and Climate

Summer is the best time to visit Mcleodganj. It has a moderate temperature ranges from 22°C to 38°C.

Monsoon hit the place in July and it is one of the places having most rainfall in Himachal Pradesh.

Winter is quite cold. temperature dips as it starts snowing in the Dhauladhar ranges and sometime touches the freezing point. It also experience snowfall. but the air coming from the snow covered peaks will make you shiver.

Places And Activities

Dharamshala: Dharamshala, a himalayan town is situated in the lap of very beautiful Dhauladhar ranges. The snow covered peaks of Dhauladhar in the backdrop presents a magnificent view from the town.

St. Johns Church: between Forsythganj and Mcleodganj is the charming church of St. John in the Wilderness. Under the shade of deodar branches, a memorial has been erected over the body of the British Viceroy, Lord Elgin who died at Dharamsala in 1863. There is a well tended old graveyard on these grassy sloped.

Dal Lake: 5 km from Dharamsala and surrounded by deodar trees this is an enchanting and serene picnic spot.

Bhagsu Nag: Close to fresh springs, this ancient temple is 11 km from Dharamsala. It is a popular picnic spot and the famous slate quarries are close by.

Triund: Triund is the destination of a 10 km long trek starting from Mcleodganj. Triund offers breathtaking and spectacular views of the surrounding picturesque mountain.

How to reach?


By Air: Nearest airport to Mcleodgang is at Gaggal just 10 kms away from here. Periodic flights to Delhi or Chandigarh are available here.

By Train: Nearest Broad gauge railway terminal is Pathankot nearly 90 kms from here, while narrow gauge terminals are Kangra and Nagrota just few Kilometers away.

By Road: Mcleodganj is easily accessible from all major cities and towns of Himachal Pradesh. Buses Ordinary/AC and taxis are available to/from Dharamshala (5 kms), Chandigarh (275 kms) and Delhi (530 kms)
