Una is the most southern district of Himachal Pradesh, bordered with Punjab. Una town is the district headquarter. Una has a mixed culture of Pahari and Punjabi. Being near to Punjab or once being the part of the Punjab, culture and life style is greatly influenced by Punjabi culture. Languages spoken here are Hindi Pahari and Punjabi. Larger area of Una is planer as compared to the other parts of the state.

Una is connected by 14 kms broad gauge railway line from Nangal Dam to Una. Himalayan Express and Janshatabdi Express run from Una to Delhi. The famous places of Una are Chintpurni temple, Dera Baba Barbhag Singh, Dera Baba Rudru are the famous places in Chamba district.

Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of Una. However, Una district also became an industrial sector due to close proximity to Punjab and being easily accessible from other major cities of North India. Mehatpur, Gagret, Tahliwal & Amb are main industrial centres of Una.

Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Una is a premier institute established in 2015 at Saloh Una which is currently being run at NIT Hamirpur till the completion of building work at Saloh.


The present Una district was a tehsil of the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab until 1st Nov.,1966. After the reorganization of Punjab in 1966, all the hill areas including Una was transferred to Himachal Pradesh. Then, until September, 1972 remained a tehsil of the then Kangra district. On the 1st September,1972 the Himachal Pradesh Govt. reorganised the Kangra district into three districts namely Una, Hamirpur and Kangra and Una district came into existance.

Geography and climate

Una is located at 31.48N 76.28E. It has an average elevation of 369 metres from sea level. Una, being situated in in the planes, is the hottest district in Himachal Pradesh, with temperatures reaching 50C in summers. In the winter the temperature get close to the freezing point due to strong himalayan winds and dense winter fog.
